We
have been fortunate to meet a group of artisans who specialise in the
ancient art of metal inlay work known as damascening. In India this craft
is known as bidri and involves inlaying silver or gold wire into grooves
etched on the metallic surface that has been blackened by chemicals. This
process brings out the designs, which stand out conspicuously against
the jet black surface.
In
conditions that are cramped, and with a minimal set of tools, these skillful
craftsmen are able to create intricate designs on the weapon 'blanks'
, that are then finished and polished.
Each
item is a unique work of art.
